Pearl Types
Pearls can be formed in a great variety of molluscs, such as oysters, mussels, clams and occassionally also in snails. However of the several hundreds of molluscs there are only a very few species that can produce pearls having commercial value. 99% of the cultured pearls available world-wide are produced in ten pearl-producing areas.
Pearl treatments - enhancements
The great majority of pearls produced would not meet the quality standards (colour, luster and surface quality). In order to make such pearls marketable, they are treated, enhanced by simple or sophisticated technologies. Natural coloured pearls are always more valuable than those treated, enhanced when other value factors are equal. The seller is obliged to disclose the fact of such treatments.
